Every week
or so, songwriters and performers from around the world compete in the
songwriting competition at songfight.org, where each competitor writes,
performs, records, and submits their song, each based on the same title, all
within a strict timeframe which varies from a week to ten days or
so.
Once a year, they get together and perform
these songs live in front of an audience.

This
year they played Seattle. Hear it here.

The host of Song Fight Wet and Wild is Spud, the musical
director of Song Fight band Octothorpe (left). According to Spud, the ongoing
activity at songfight.org has attracted the attention of many web portals,
entertainment guides, etc., as well as a mention in the February 2002 issue of
SPIN magazine. For the past two years, many of the regular participants have
gotten together somewhere in the U.S. for a live show, in a format which allows
them to compete live in a situation similar to the virtual competition which
occurs on the web. This year, the live event will be held in Seattle. Spud says
"We have 10 bands committed, and are expecting more in the coming weeks. This
is going to be one kickass show." |

Last year's second annual event, Song Fight Plain and
Tall, was held in Lancaster Pennsylvania. Song Fight Plain and Tall attracted
artists from as far south as Florida (Hoblit) and as far west as Seattle
(Octothorpe). Additional visiting bands included Dr. Worm, Prosthetic Johnson,
Gareth Sparks, 1516 Puzzle. Local acts included The John Benjamin Band, Brick
Pig, Raised by Wolves, and the host himself, Frankie Big Face (left). For their
final number, Octothorpe invited the audience to participate either with
hand-held percussion from their seats or their own instruments on stage. The
house was emptied as most of the musicians came up to join them in a SongFight
megaband version of their "On My Block". |

Returning bands include Hoblit (left), Frankie Big Face,
The John Benjamin Band, 1516 Puzzle, and Octothorpe. Several new acts will
appear as well, including Song Fight veterans Add Music, Fluffy Porcupine, and
Pray For Mojo, as well as newcomers Klownhole, Ken's Super Duper Band 'n Stuff,
and member of SonOfSupercar and The Suzies. The format will allow bands to
introduce themselves with a number of their choosing, and the the fights will
begin. In addition to material previously presented at songfight.org, bands
will debut their versions of a new song "Unless I Change My Mind" in the first
ever live debut of a Song Fight song, and participate in another megaband
jam. |
